New rail commissioned on Dead 4/5 track

Racegoers were few and far between at Avondale on Saturday 2 April 2022 but those who attended saw the first use of the club’s new rail and witnessed some good racing. The track came up a Dead 5 (close to the club’s plan) and was upgraded halfway through to a Dead 4.

One of the best wins was the three year old gelding Midnight Mass, for three from seven. He came from last to sprint well in the straight.  Nigel Tiley, trainer, was quoted as saying  “He’s a genuine firm track galloper and he’s been a victim of some of the watering of some of the tracks”.

Tiley also made comment about NZTR’s intention to close the Avondale track: “I think Auckland is genuinely going to struggle if we lose Avondale. Is Pukekohe and Te Aroha, when they get going again, going to be able to handle the workload with the tracks? My thought is that Avondale is an important part of the northern racing scene. If Auckland and Avondale get their heads together and come up with a maintenance programme that’s going to be beneficial, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be utilising Avondale.”

The next Avondale raceday is on ANZAC day, 25th April, 2022.
